Money cant buy you......

This old saying ran through my mind as I read this article. I am sharing this because,in our fast paced race to win, its important to understand why we are running that race, and ulimately, what's really important.

Read this insightful article about Money and the Meaning of Life by Bill Taylor from the Harvard Business Review to explore the subject a bit more.

How secure is Your (economic) Future?

Whatever your answers are, several things are true:
1. We need more people willing and able to take on the responsibility and risk of starting their own businesses in Nigeria. Clearly, the level of local enterprise isn’t high enough to break the chains of poverty that bind many families and individuals in our towns and communities.
2. We are a very lucrative market with a lot of promise. Many of the foreign investors establishing and expanding businesses in Nigeria will tell you that. Challenge is, not enough of our own people are venturing and gaining from the economic promise this market holds.
3. Yet, there are many small businesses starting and failing, some unable to grow beyond subsistence level for many reasons - lack of capital, lack of infrastructure, lack of expertise, not enough skilled labour, poor attitude to work, poor processes/systems, corruption...there are many reasons why businesses in this (and other) economies fail.

The point is, we will continue to have high poverty levels with the corresponding crime, unemployment and general stress rates we have in the country today if we do not actively find and make available the resources (financial, knowledge based, technological and attitudinal) needed to change things.

Unless and Until we pool our individual resources to equip many more people to make their own living, we are collectively at risk…our future, our security and our very existence as a people. Organizations; local and international, governmental and non-governmental have jumped into the fray with various poverty alleviation initiatives. These are welcome developments.

But, the change required is way beyond the scope of a few formalized attempts, by selected organizations. We must tackle this issue at community, family and individual levels and many more people must be prepared to sacrifice their resources in order to safeguard a Nigeria of the future where development and economic resources are spread more evenly across the country.

Where a young man can stay in his village or locale and still make a decent living and enjoy the amenities of modern life, where the necessity and evil of handouts that fuel political and social corruption and crime are reduced because those who choose to, CAN make a living. Where many more people have an understanding of vision and purpose and can realize a better living for themselves and their families.

This change has to start with individuals understanding and contributing their own bit, in their own sphere of influence. We must venture more. Majority of the world's stronger economies were built on the back of mass enterprise and the determination of the man on the street to take responsibility for creating his own living.
So here are 4 things you can do for change today:
1. Share this article with everyone in your networks and email.
2. Think of how you as an individual can pitch in on the effort of building our youth and economy.
3. Take advantage of platforms like Go Forth Nigeria (this one) and bring entrepreneurial and attitudinal skills to youth in your community by contacting us for a free course.
4. Volunteer to facilitate the training we offer in your own community.

Whichever you choose to do, please DO something today.

Welcome to Go Forth!

We often complain about our circumstances as a nation and as individuals. We are challenged with eroding values, poverty, unemployment, crime...the list goes on and on. On the other hand we agree that Nigeria is indeed a great nation with great potential particularly rich in human capital. In my opinion, Nigerians are some of the smartest people in this planet!

So how can we change all the doom and gloom and the general sense of helplessness especially with our youth and the less privileged? I often say in the classes I teach that if each individual took responsibility for their own sphere of influence, positive change will come.

The good thing is, many of us in our homes and social structures are doing what we can. This blog provides an opportunity to pool resources for greater speed and impact.

Go forth is an unashamedly Christian organization seeking to impact target audiences with the tools, learning and resources to tackle some of the more serious challenges we face including:

1.Poverty
2. Values
3. Life Skills
4.Relationships
5. Wellness

We believe that given illumination, minds can be changed positively by education and by the Power of God to make our future as a people better.

This is a volunteer effort of Christian professionals willing to share their learning and experience with youth groups (for a start) who are looking for the training to make a better life for their members.

Current training available includes - Entrepreneurship, Self Leadership, Work Readiness, Communication Skills, Building Godly Character, Finding Your Purpose amongst others.

As previously stated, these classes are offered for free to youth groups. This blog will also seek to find and share free resources available online for training in the areas highlighted. Other professionals willing to volunteer are welcome to do so.
